Pokémon Desert Winds is the first game of the three-game trilogy of Mr. Yokai's Pokémon series. While it does not have much Pokémon as with Kotomo Beyond (the entirely trilogy ending with 500 less Pokémon than the Kotomo and Kutekina combined), it still does have a bunch of new ones.

The game takes place in the region of Zandezae- while not based off of one real-world place, unlike the previous games, it is based off of Mexico, Egypt, and Asia- with some Texas in it.

There are no new types in this region, unlike the other games.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The game starts with the trainer having arrived late for their starter pick-up from Ross and requesting for something new. Much to their surprise, Ross is not there; assuming that he has simply went out, they decide to wait for him. However, after one hour of no contact, they eventually decide to head back inside to see what's going on. Much to their horror, they soon realize that his entire office is wrecked- the Maractus he keeps is, in fact, bruised.

Startled and nearly scared, the Maractus eventually has to calm them down as they soon realize that there's two Pokémon that were being researched. Unfortunately, strange Pokémon soon break in- with no choice, the trainer attempts to send out both Pokémon, but one of them is snatched up in the process, depending on the player's starter preference. The player's remaining Pokémon soon fends them off, but fails to get the other Pokémon back. Having been in a close call, the trainer soon excuses themselves from the laboratory to try and find where Ross is.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Pokémon Desert Winds takes on a new twist to the franchise: Instead of turn-based battles, the player is capable of sending out their Pokémon in the overworld. Each Pokémon have a unique set of one to four moves corresponding to their types (or another); by using two moves in succession, Pokémon are capable of executing Combos, completely unique moves to a certain Pokémon. For example, if Porkumys uses Tackle, then Poison Pin, it becomes Acid Roll. Combos must be recharged after one is used; depending on the power of it, the recharge may be longer or not.

Other Changes[edit | edit source]

  • Rock is now super-effective against Electric.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • This is the second Pokémon game developed. Despite doing Kotomo Beyond, Mr. Yokai does have some creativity block with it, especially since he lacks any of Pyra's support.
